After reading this article, you have to wonder why the US military and the US is the only country that has an issue with Gays, lesbian and intersex people serving in the Military. This article written in Yahoo News, talks about how in America, we are debating on whether they should end Don’t ask, Don’t tell and it shows how other countries such as Israel, Canada, UK and Australia, who lifted the ban on gays, lesbian and intersex people and successfully integrated them with very little to no problems and no issues whatsoever.
I just think that the US military and the US should get over their fears of gays, lesbian and intersex people in the military, follow the examples such as the Israeli Defense forces, Canadian forces, British military and the Australian Defense forces. Those military service have gays, lesbian and even intersex people who openly serve and they seem to work out fine and very well. I just think that the US military as a whole is afraid and is digging it’s heals, in the face of social opinion and the fact that our NATO allies and our allies, who we work with on the daily basis. They have gays, lesbian and intersex people in their service and they seem to work out just fine with them.
The one thing that struck me in this article, is that how each country, in the beginning, had an issue with gays, lesbian and intersex people in their service, then as the months and years gone by. The issue seem to be a moot point to them. The article looked at three countries, Israel, UK and Australia. The one country most interesting is Israel and the Israeli Defense Forces. This is a country that is at a wartime footing all the time and to integrate gays, lesbian and intersex people into the IDF while they are at war. They don’t seem to have an issue with gays in their military whatsoever. The Israeli Defense Forces is one of the most liberal military service in the world and i know that they allow women in all types of jobs including front line combat. They also, allow gays, lesbian and intersex people to serve openly and they don’t have an issue with gays, lesbian and intersex people in the IDF. What’s startling about this, is that the state of Israel and the Israeli Defense Forces is the United State‘s biggest allies and it shocks me that in Israel, they let them serve openly, while in the US it’s kept quiet or if you tell, your out.
I think it’s very foolish that the US Military would still continue with Don’t ask, Don’t tell. While our NATO allies who have personnel in their military service, who are gay, lesbian, intersex and serve openly in their countries military service. It makes us look like the laughing stock of the world. They want to emulate us, but when they see that we are not treating people like equals in the military, they ask us why we do that and why do we still live like we fear gays, lesbian and intersex people in the US Military.
