How Coed is your college or University

Here’s my question, How Coed is your university and how coed is living on campus. I was thinking that the traditional notion of Coed where it stands now is where Men and women living on campus together. Though the set up of Coed housing seems to be totally different from that the definition of Coed is right now. Now, I always thought that Coed means that Men and women living together on campus regardless of what dorm. Though at my university the meaning of Coed housing is where men live on one floor and women live on the other floor.

Now is this the kind of Coed that society and the younger generation expect in the 21st century. It seems this kind of Coed university housing arrangement is a reminiscent of a bygone era of the 1970’s and some how still breeds gender discrimination.  I think that the word Coed needs to go because I believe that in the 21st century the notion of Coed housing is as old and archaic as the 19th and 20th century.

I believe that if a University is to truly be Coed, one must get rid of the notion of gender and stop the segregation of gender in University housing. I believe that Universities need to get rid of the notion of Coed housing and allow anyone to room with each other regardless of gender. I also believe that if colleges and universities want to continue with the present coed housing scheme, they first need to either define or redefine what it means to be coed university and how it fits into the 21st century of university education.

I believe that in the 21st century of university education, the notion of Coed housing is where men and women room together regardless of gender and that gender is somewhat meaningless in the 21st century. It’s not where men and women are segregated by floor, but where men and women room together in the same room and on the same floor.

As it stands their are universities out their are are getting rid of the notion of Coed housing and going to a gender neutral housing. Though that is a good start, but it doesn’t mirror what the real world is outside of the university and I wonder is this one of the things the Universities around the world lack. Do they lack in teaching the Real world. Do they lack the understanding that No one is going live in a gender segregated housing system after college.
