One of the things that dawned upon me as I was talking to @caissg is how mainstream is Intersex/DSD. My view is that it’s a good idea that Intersex has gone mainstream, and people are slowing learning more about intersex people such as myself. Though on the other hand I see problems with intersex going mainstream and it’s because their have been many transgender people who constantly hijack and co-opt intersex people to justify and legitimize their existence at Intersex people’s expense. I have often seen cases of transgender people fake and pretend to be intersex in order to gain sympathy, legitimacy and justification. It’s a common problem with intersex/DSD people trying to go mainstream, when you have transgender people who pretend to be intersex and try to pass themselves as intersex people. It makes it lot harder for Intersex/DSD people to go mainstream and often times frustrates them.
It’s why Intersex/DSD often have a hard time trying to get noticed in society and recognized in the Media outlets. If you ever wonder why no Actual biological born intersex person is ever heard in the media? It’s because all too often people mistake Intersex people with transgender people and as a result, Intersex people get erased and never heard about. All because people and society confuse Intersex people with Transgender people. It’s why on CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC or Foxnews, you don’t hear anything about Intersex people because Intersex people often get erased and mistaken for Transgender people. It’s why Intersex people like myself often have a hard time getting noticed and recognized in society, all because people confuse intersex people with transgender people and they can’t seem tell the difference.
As a result, it hurts the image of what an intersex person is and looks like because you have transgender people going around online and in society pretending to be intersex and even going to the media with a SOB story. All it dose is it makes life very hard for Intersex people and as a result, Intersex people have to work overtime to overcome the confusion on top of all the medical problems with being born Intersex. It’s why, when you watch those documentary shows such as Dateline NBC or 20/20 on ABC, you don’t see the real deal, actual born intersex. Instead you see transgender people, who are pulling a fast one on people with a fake intersex story and trying to garner sympathy for their transsexualism at the expense of Intersex people.
It’s why Intersex/DSD people like me and Organizations such as Advocates for Informed Choice have to work very hard for intersex/DSD people to be recognized and notice. It doesn’t help when you have transgender people and genderqueer people constantly attacking, hijacking and co-opting intersex people and their narratives for their own agenda. All it dose is erase intersex/DSD people from existence and hides intersex people in the shadows. It’s why Intersex people are slowly coming out of the shadows and making themselves known and people like me who are born with an Intersex condition are slowly making our presence in society.
It’s why I have often advocated, that Intersex/DSD people need to have a voice to speak up. They need to be recognized and noticed in the society. They need to speak up, and the media needs to really take notice on Intersex/DSD people. Too often, Intersex/DSD people are never heard from because transgender people constantly hijack and co-opt intersex people. As a result, were often, ignored, erased, hidden and confused with transgender people in society. It’s why I feel that, going mainstream is going to be a lot harder for intersex people and Intersex people like me have to work very hard to be noticed in society. We simply can’t be hidden, invisible or erased anymore and going mainstream is the only way Intersex people will be heard.
