Ever since Laos got back into the Fighter game with the Yak-130 Advanced Jet trainer/Light attack Aircraft. There have been some discussion within defense circles on where the LPLAAF is going and what is their Future Fighter. The Yak-130 is great for building up a cadre of Fighter pilots and developing doctrine & tactics for them. Where they go from the Yak-130 is anyone’s guess. Some online are pushing the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force to talk to China on the J-10 but I think what is more appropriate for Laos is the JF-17 Thunder from Pakistan/China.

There has been recent discussions within the Defense circles that Laos should consider the J-10 from China but I have my doubts and serious questions on whether it’s too early or too much for Laos to hand the J-10. Now don’t get me wrong, that the J-10 from China is a nice and fine aircraft but for Laos geography and location. IMO, the J-10 would be way too MUCH, too technical too LARGE for a small Air force like the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force. I can see the J-10 for a Medium to Large Air forces like China and Pakistan but for Laos it’s too big for their Size. On top of all that, I highly doubt the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force & the Lao Government have the Cash to pay for the J-10.

JF-17-45

Which is why in my opinion, the JF-17 Thunder that is jointly designed and built by Pakistan and China is what the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force is geared towards. The reason why I believe that the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force should plan for the JF-17 over the J-10 is because of low cost to buy and own and it fits the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force’s needs. The JF-17 even cost much lesser to own and operate than the J-10 that many Laotians are trying to push the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force to buy.

It’s why I believe that many Laotians are wrong in pushing the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force to the J-10 because it’s too much of a Fighter for Laos and Laos is much more suited for the JF-17 on the fact that it cost less to buy and operate. They can get two squadrons worth of JF-17’s for the price of a single squadron of J-10’s. If you look at what the JF-17 brings to the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force;

JF-17 Thunder Pakistan Air Force PAF C-802A Anti-ship Missile SD-10A BVRAAM PL-5E II WVRAAM 500 kg LS-6 Satellite Inertially Guided Bomb LT-3 LT-2LS-500J Laser HAFER H-4PGM RAAD MAR-1

What it would give the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force is an Air force that can stand up to Thailand and Vietnam. It would give them a fighter that cost less to own and operate and that is scalable and upgradable over time. Here’s the Youtube video on why the JF-17 fits Laos and the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force very well.

So you can see why the Lao people’s Liberation Army Air force should seriously consider the JF-17 over the J-10.
